7 Beauty Myths

When it comes to our beauty habits, we look at the ‘dont’s’ as much as the ‘dos’. But sometimes we have outdated, or just plain incorrect, information. We’ve all been a victim to false information or beauty hacks, but fear not! Here are 7 popular beauty myths debunked!

Myth #1: Drinking water directly affects the hydration of your skin.

Fact: Unless you’re dehydrated, drinking water isn’t going to make an obvious difference to the quality of your skin. Skin hydration is either endogenous, meaning we create it ourselves through natural oil production, or is exogenous, meaning we add moisture through creams, lotions, or oils. You should still be drinking that water, but make sure you’re still using a moisturizer to combat dryness.

Myth #2: Hypoallergenic products are better for sensitive skin.

Fact: This is a myth that I’ve fallen victim to time and time again. The term hypoallergenic indicates to us, the consumer, that the product is better for allergy-prone or sensitive skin types. Instead of seeking out products claiming to be hypoallergenic, look for gentle, fragrance-free products with soothing ingredients.

Myth #3: Wearing makeup causes acne.

Fact: Makeup itself has not been proven to cause acne. However(!), if you’re not removing it correctly and consistently, that’s when problems arise. When you don’t remove all of your makeup at the end of the night (or fall asleep with it on) it means that your skin care products won’t benefit your skin 100%, or it suggests you aren’t using any products at all. Proper cleaning of the skin is important for everyone, especially is you do wear makeup.

Myth #4: Pumping your mascara wand makes for better application.

Fact: Not only does this do nothing for your lashes, pumping allows more air into the tube, drying out the mascara and adding bacteria. Your lashes are left looking flaky and you may be at risk for an eye infection. Instead, swirl the mascara wand inside the tube to grab more product.

Myth #5: Trimming your hair will make it grow faster.

Fact: This is really just an illusion, but that doesn’t mean you should skip on your regular hair appointments! After a trim, we’re rid of split-ends that result in breakage of the hair follicle. Chopping these dead ends off makes your hair healthier and look fuller, but does not physically speed up the hair growing process.

Myth #6: Shaving makes hair grow back thicker.

Fact: You’ll be happy to hear that this just is not the truth. Hair only appears to be thicker because as the hair grows back it is shorter and more stubbly, giving the illusion that it is thicker than it is. For a longer lasting hair removal, try a wax, or for even longer lasting results, laser hair removal.

Myth #7: Your teeth can never be ‘too white’, right?

Fact: Wrong. Dentists say that excessive whitening can make your teeth translucent, and recommend that once a year is enough when it comes to whitening agents like bleaching trays or strips. Daily brushing, floss, and mouthwash are really all you need to keep your smile healthy and looking its best!
