Foods That Give You Naturally Healthy Skin

We get asked this question a lot: “What could I be eating that could improve my skin?” The truth is, there are a ton of great healthy foods that give you naturally healthy and beautiful skin, including chocolate! At Skin Revival, we’re not just passionate about providing you the best skin care solutions, but improving your overall lifestyle when it comes to how you feel. That’s why we also recommend these 6 foods you can be eating for naturally healthy skin.

Dark Chocolate & Cocoa

As if you needed any more reasons to eat chocolate.

Participants in a study found that after 6-12 weeks of consuming cocoa, they were left with thicker, more hydrated skin. In fact, regularly eating just 20 grams of dark chocolate can allow your skin to withstand more than twice the UV radiation before burning. It’s because dark chocolate, and more specifically chocolate with at least 70% cocoa, is high in antioxidants and great for naturally healthy skin.

Avocados

Avocados aren’t just for making guacamole!  And truthfully, if you’re going to be paying an extra buck or two for anything, it should be for naturally healthy skin. Avocados just so happen to be high in healthy fats, a good source of vitamin E, and a natural source of vitamin C. Healthy fats improve flexibility of your skin and keeps it moisturized. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant that protects your skin from oxidative damage. Vitamin C helps with the production of collagen, the main structural protein that keeps your skin strong and naturally healthy. Avocados are the perfect food for healthy skin… and to go on toast.

Walnuts

Walnuts are a treat mainly shared over the Christmas holidays. But what if there was a benefit to eating them all year round? Walnuts are in fact a natural source of zinc, an essential element for skin function. Zinc helps with healing wounds and fighting bacteria and inflammation. It acts as a naturally barrier to protect your skin. Walnuts, like avocados also contain fatty acids and proteins that are both essential for naturally healthy skin.

Sweet Potatoes

The sweet potato isn’t just a spud with a heart. Sweet potatoes contain beta-carotene which helps provide you with Vitamin A. In fact, 1/2-cup serving contains enough beta carotene to provide you with nearly four times your recommended daily intake of vitamin A.

This antioxidant protects your skin cells from sun exposure preventing things like sunburns, cell death and the effects of dry, wrinkled skin.

Green Tea

Green Tea has a ton of healthy benefits, but did you know it’s also great for skin? Catechins, a powerful compound found in green tea, work to protect and improve the health of your skin. Regularly consuming these Catechins can help protect your skin against sun damage by as much as 25%!  So next time you’re in the drive thru about to order your grande flat white, change it up, and try some green tea.  At home, try adding a tiny bit of ginger, mint, or garnishing with fruit to make it taste more to your liking.

Salmon, Mackerel & Herring

Does something smell fishy? It might be good for your skin.

Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and herring are excellent for naturally healthy skin. Like the avocados and walnuts we mentioned above, they are rich sources of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids which are important for skin health. Since your body doesn’t naturally produce these essential fatty acids, they must be obtained through your diet. These fatty acids keep skin supple and moisturized. Without getting enough omega fats in our diet you would have a higher chance in getting conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
