The Benefits of Vitamin C
Vitamin C, or L-ascorbic acid, is the vitamin we really only think about when we’re sick or when we promise ourselves that we’ll get more of it and then forget about it once we’re healthy again. But how much do you really know about the effects of Vitamin C or the benefits of Vitamin C? Specialists are finding more and more benefits, so here are a few to peak your interest.
Essential for healthy skin –Topical Vitamin C is becoming more common, and with good reason. Studies have found that higher Vitamin C intake is linked to better skin appearance, less wrinkling, and dryness. It also fights against damage caused by free radicals, as well as exposure from environmental damage, toxic chemicals and pollutants, and even UV-induced damage.
Essential to a healthy diet – Vitamin C is required for our bodies to produce collagen (a component of connective tissues), absorb iron, metabolize protein, heal wounds, and act as an antioxidant which is important for immune function. The recommended amount is 500mg, which can be achieved through eating/drinking a lot of fruits and veggies, but specialists recommend a supplement just to make sure you’re getting enough.
Helps prevent health issues – While it certainly isn’t a cure, studies have shown that Vitamin C can reduce the risks of immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health issues, and eye disease. So it won’t prevent you from ever getting a cold, but can reduce the risk of it escalating to pneumonia and lung infections.
