Acne Treatment in Ottawa

Acne Isn’t Just a Teenage Concern

Adult acne is increasingly common and often more complex than adolescent breakouts. Approximately 45% of women aged 20–29, 35% of women aged 30–39, and 20% of women aged 40–49 experience acne in some form.

What makes adult acne particularly challenging is that it frequently exists alongside the signs of aging. As skin matures, traditional over-the-counter acne treatments often become too harsh, leading to dryness, irritation, and a higher risk of scarring. At the same time, many anti-aging products are too heavy for acne-prone skin, contributing to congestion and ongoing breakouts.

Adding to the challenge, natural cell turnover slows with age, increasing the likelihood of lingering marks and acne scarring when breakouts occur.

This cycle can feel frustrating — but with a deeper understanding of why acne is happening, it becomes much easier to create a treatment plan that supports both clear skin now and long-term skin health.

Once active acne is under control, the journey often isn’t over. Many clients are left with lingering marks, redness, pigmentation, or textural changes that can take far longer to resolve than the breakouts themselves.

This is where our expertise comes in. Skin Revival specializes in acne scar treatment, with multiple advanced tools and technologies available to address all types of post-acne concerns — from textural scarring, to post-inflammatory erythema (PIE), to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). By selecting the right treatment at the right time, we’re able to safely improve skin tone, texture, and clarity while supporting long-term skin health.

Advanced Skin Consultation + Skin Reset

This in-depth, in-clinic consultation is designed for those seeking clarity, education, and expert guidance on their skin — not just a treatment. It combines a comprehensive skin analysis with a corrective mini-treatment to help calm, support, and “reset” the skin while establishing a clear plan forward.

The primary focus of this service is understanding your skin, identifying contributing factors such as lifestyle and homecare, and creating a long-term strategy for improved skin health. It is ideal for clients who feel stuck, overwhelmed by product choices, or unsure which treatments or routines are right for them.

This is not a deep congestion-clearing facial.
If your skin requires extensive extractions or hands-on corrective work, one of our custom facial treatments may be more appropriate and can be recommended during your visit.

Best suited for:

  • New clients seeking professional guidance

  • Clients experiencing changes in their skin

  • Those needing a reset or second opinion

  • Anyone looking for education and a clear homecare plan

Includes:

  • Comprehensive skin health assessment

  • Lifestyle and skincare education

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are a powerful and versatile tool in the treatment of both active acne and post-acne concerns when used strategically and professionally. Rather than aggressively stripping the skin, modern clinical peels work by encouraging healthy cell turnover, clearing congestion, and improving overall skin function.

For acne-prone skin, chemical peels help to:

  • Unclog pores by dissolving excess oil and debris

  • Reduce the buildup of dead skin cells that contribute to breakouts

  • Calm inflammation and bacteria associated with acne

  • Improve skin tone and texture over time

Different peel formulations target acne in different ways. Salicylic-based peels are oil-soluble, allowing them to penetrate into the pore lining to address congestion and active breakouts. Other blends focus on regulating cell turnover, improving post-inflammatory discoloration, and supporting barrier repair — all critical for long-term acne management.

Chemical peels are also an important tool once active acne begins to improve. By increasing cell renewal, peels help reduce the appearance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and support smoother, more even skin texture. When timed appropriately, they can play a key role in preventing lingering marks and minimizing the risk of future scarring.

At Skin Revival, chemical peels are never one-size-fits-all. Peel strength, formulation, and frequency are carefully selected based on your skin type, acne severity, sensitivity level, and where you are in your acne journey. Overuse or improper selection can worsen inflammation — which is why professional guidance is essential.

When used as part of a customized acne treatment plan, chemical peels can be an effective, corrective step toward clearer skin, healthier function, and more even tone — supporting both short-term improvement and long-term skin health.

Deeper Resurfacing & Texture Control

When acne has left behind textural scarring — such as pitted, uneven, or rough skin — deeper resurfacing treatments are often required to stimulate meaningful skin remodeling. These advanced treatments work by triggering controlled micro-injuries in the skin, encouraging new collagen formation and improving overall texture, firmness, and smoothness over time.

Texture-focused treatments must be carefully selected and timed, especially for acne-prone or reactive skin. At Skin Revival, resurfacing is introduced only when active acne is well managed and the skin barrier is stable, ensuring results are improved without compromising skin health. With multiple resurfacing technologies available, we’re able to tailor treatment intensity based on scar type, skin tone, and recovery tolerance — creating progressive, natural-looking improvement rather than aggressive, one-time correction.

Texture & Scar Treatments May Include:

  • Laser resurfacing – Improves pitted scars and uneven texture by stimulating collagen renewal

  • Microneedling & RF microneedling – Encourages skin remodeling and softens scar depth

  • Advanced chemical peels – Supports cell turnover and surface texture refinement

  • Targeted corrective treatments – Used strategically based on scar type and skin response

What Causes Acne?

Acne is a multifactorial skin condition, meaning it rarely has a single cause. Instead, it develops through a combination of internal and external factors that affect how the skin produces oil, sheds dead skin cells, responds to inflammation, and interacts with bacteria.

At its core, acne begins in the pilosebaceous unit — the hair follicle and oil gland. When this system becomes disrupted, breakouts can occur.

Key contributors to acne include:

Excess oil (sebum) production
Sebaceous glands may become overactive, often influenced by hormones such as androgens. Excess oil creates an environment where pores are more likely to become congested and inflamed.

Abnormal cell turnover
Healthy skin sheds dead cells efficiently. When cell turnover slows or becomes irregular, dead skin cells accumulate and mix with oil inside the pore, forming blockages that lead to blackheads, whiteheads, and inflammatory lesions.

Bacterial activity
The bacteria Cutibacterium acnes (formerly P. acnes) naturally lives on the skin. When trapped inside a clogged pore, it can multiply rapidly, triggering inflammation and the formation of papules, pustules, and cysts.

Inflammation
Inflammation plays a central role in acne severity. Once the pore becomes blocked and bacteria proliferate, the immune system responds — leading to redness, swelling, pain, and deeper breakouts.

Hormonal influences
Hormonal fluctuations are a major driver of acne at all ages. This includes puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, postpartum changes, perimenopause, menopause, and conditions such as PCOS. Hormonal shifts increase oil production and can alter how skin cells behave within the pore.

Lifestyle and environmental factors
Stress, lack of sleep, dietary patterns, skincare habits, and exposure to comedogenic products can all influence acne severity. Chronic stress in particular increases cortisol levels, which can worsen oil production and inflammation.

Genetics
If acne runs in your family, you may be more prone to persistent or treatment-resistant breakouts due to inherited tendencies in oil production, inflammation, or cell turnover.

Why understanding the cause matters

Because acne is influenced by multiple overlapping factors, treating it successfully requires more than a single product or treatment. Addressing only the surface symptoms often leads to temporary improvement, followed by recurring breakouts.

At Skin Revival, acne treatment is focused on identifying which factors are driving your acne and building a plan that addresses both the visible symptoms and the underlying triggers — allowing for clearer skin now and healthier skin long-term.

Acne Scarring: Causes and Types

Acne scars develop when inflammation from a breakout damages the skin’s deeper support structures. When the body attempts to repair this damage, collagen production can become either insufficient or excessive — leading to changes in texture, tone, and structure.

Several factors increase the likelihood of scarring:

Depth and severity of inflammation
Deeper, more inflamed lesions such as cysts and nodules are more likely to damage collagen and elastin, increasing the risk of permanent scarring.

Delayed or improper treatment
Untreated acne or aggressive picking and squeezing can prolong inflammation and disrupt proper healing.

Impaired healing response
As we age, collagen production slows and skin regeneration becomes less efficient, increasing the risk that breakouts heal with residual marks or texture changes.

Genetic predisposition
Some individuals are more prone to scarring due to how their skin produces and remodels collagen during healing.

Types of acne scars and post-acne marks

Not all acne “scars” are the same. Identifying the type is critical in choosing the right treatment approach.

Textural (atrophic) scars
These scars form when collagen is lost during healing, leaving depressions in the skin. Common types include:

  • Ice pick scars – Deep, narrow indentations that extend into the dermis

  • Boxcar scars – Wider, sharply defined depressions

  • Rolling scars – Broad, uneven texture caused by fibrous bands beneath the skin

Post-inflammatory erythema (PIE)
PIE appears as red or pink marks left behind after acne heals. It is caused by dilated or damaged blood vessels rather than true scarring. PIE is common in lighter skin tones and often fades with the right treatments.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
PIH presents as brown or dark spots that develop after inflammation triggers excess pigment production. It is more common in medium to deeper skin tones and can persist for months without proper treatment.

Hypertrophic scars (raised scars)
Less common but more severe, these occur when the body produces excess collagen during healing, leading to raised, thickened scar tissue.

Why scar type matters

Each type of acne scar responds differently to treatment. What improves redness may not improve texture, and what resurfaces texture may not address pigmentation.

At Skin Revival, we focus on accurate scar identification, proper timing, and the strategic use of multiple technologies to safely improve acne scarring while protecting long-term skin health.

When can acne scars be treated?

Acne scar treatment is most effective once active breakouts are well controlled and the skin barrier is stable. Treating scars too early — while inflammation is still present — can worsen irritation, slow healing, and increase the risk of further scarring.

At Skin Revival, we take a staged approach to acne care. The initial focus is calming active acne and restoring healthy skin function. Once the skin is stable, scar-focused treatments can be introduced safely and strategically. This timing allows treatments to work more effectively and supports better, longer-lasting results.

Every plan is adjusted based on how your skin responds, ensuring that scar treatment is introduced at the right time — not rushed, and never at the expense of skin health.
