5 Skin-Saving Vacation Tips

You want a nice tan, but you don’t want sunspots. You want those refreshing slushy drinks, but don’t need the sugar. You still want to wear your make up and look flawless, but usually, end up with pimples. Having just come back from vacation myself, I know these struggles all too well. It’s a push and pull to create balance!

Here are 5 skin-saving tips you’ll definitely want to try on your next trip.

1. Prepare your skin for change!

You may not have realized it, but preparing your skin before you leave can lay the path for healthy skin while on vacation. A balancing facial that helps to eliminate dry skin and impurities can help to get your skin in top shape. If your skin is struggling before you go chances are the struggle will continue through your entire vacation, so it’s important to start treating your skin before you go.

2. Go fresh-faced!

I don’t know about you but my skin always feels gross after a flight. The air is different, you’ve touched many public things, and as much as you tried not to, you’ve touched your face. Try wearing minimal makeup and opt for a tinted moisturizer instead. Something light and breathable to keep skin hydrated and oil free. Pack a small bag of wipes to not only clean your hands but wipe your face if it starts to feel greasy, especially if you are acne prone.

My favourite trick: take a Ziploc bag and pre-soak some cotton pads in your favourite toner for a quick cleanse on the go.

3. You are what you eat!

Since our regular eating habits tend to fly out the window as we enter the plane and switch on vacation mood, it’s important to choose wisely! I’m not saying to suffer and stand by while everyone else enjoys the endless buffet and never ending drinks, but try to make some healthy choices too. Dehydration on vacation is a struggle, so opt for foods with high water content. Juicy fruit, veggies, soups and salads are the best remedy!

4. You can’t sunscreen too much!

Some of my worst burns have been on the cloudiest days. You try to justify not putting it on because it’s overcast or not too hot, and by the end of the day, you’re a lobster! It’s important to not only to wear your sunscreen but to reapply regularly! It doesn’t matter what brand or SPF you use – if you don’t reapply it cannot protect you.

Make sure to reapply every couple hours, especially after being in the water, and wear hats to protect your face. Not only are you avoiding a nasty sunburn, but you’re also protecting yourself against skin cancer. Whether you burn or not, skin cancer affects ALL skin types, so make sure you’re protected!

5. Mask it!

My favourite time to mask is on vacation. I personally choose a detox mask to keep breakouts at bay, but soothing and hydrating masks can feel like heaven if you’ve been burnt. Many people think they need to do these at night, which on vacation is not always realistic. Throw it on before you shower and rinse off right before you get out.

Do this every few days to keep that glowing complexion!
